Stress hits & chocolate fits.

And the thing is… when you’re chowin down on chocolate (and everything in sight) you don’t even want to stop. So how can you?

If only logic helped

Ever find yourself standing at the kitchen cupboard grabbing yet another piece of chocolate, and then another, and then… just one more! But each bite only seems to spark a hunger so fierce you’re positive it’s like there’s no way you’ve ever eaten food before.

Sure, it’s just elevated cortisol and lack of sleep and your hormones and blah blah blah… who cares?!?

When you’re in that moment, chowing down everyyyyything you can get your hands on, science doesn’t mean sh*t. All you know is – you can’t stop.

But why me?

You want to gorge because every bite is an alluring escape from whatever pressures you put in your mind (oh and sure, that damn cortisol). That thing you are avoiding doing – yeah, you don’t wanna do that. Maybe it’s boring work, important work, or emotions that need recognition. It’s all avoidance problem solving at its best.

So when you’re in that moment of no logical reasoning, how do you get out of it?

  1. GET OUT – move away from temptation. Go outside and move somewhere ASAP.
  2. GET HELP – Call your bff/fam/whoever the second you recognize it. We cannot hold ourselves accountable in these moments. The habit first has to be created to reach for support or a healthy distraction.

How to do all that when you don’t really want to stop?

DAILY visualize how you will react to stress. Imagine yourself calling a friend when you start opening up the jar of cashews again (am I the only one with a raw cashew snacking problem? My god they trigger me to eat the entire kitchen.) DAILY visualize yourself putting on your shoes the minute you realize you’re tense.

Habits are set by triggers – and they work – so put your trigger of an actionable positive response habit in site. Put your running shoes in the kitchen!! Below your snacking cupboard maybe? Put a giant pic of a phone on your cupboard. Only walk to the kitchen with your cell in your hand so you can call someone. You need a habit TRIGGER it ain’t gunna happen on its own. When you’re in that moment not thinking clearly, you need a set in habit.

Number three… create something!

Creating anything you enjoy (like baking something ) can put you in the zone and stop you from eating (of course, there’s licking the bowl, but that’s besides the point). Why? Because making something is firstly allowing yourself to let your creativity and pent up energy out and secondly you feel productive – the one thing that stops stress is doing something else and getting a reward.

Have a friend who could use this? What’s one positive reaction habit you can create? Share with friends who stress eat – talking about our goals makes it all the more likely we’ll stick to it!

How not to “sacrifice” anything and lose weight

How many times have we heard; “You have to sacrifice what you want now to reach your goals.”, or “Suffer now, but reap the rewards later.”?

Except it’s not really about sacrifice. For one, it’s more about creating enough self-confidence, one small promise at a time, to actually want to do what’s best for you. Next, it’s about accepting that you will be uncomfortable sometimes. But that’s about it.

Break the guilt-trip cycle: forgive & forget

You’re lying in bed, your stomach hurts from all the food, and your head keeps spinning over the same thing, “Why.. why did I eat so much again”. You feel gross, full of regret, and the guilt-trip is bubbling up. You promise yourself, “Tomorrow will be a good day. I won’t over-do it tomorrow.”

-beepbeepbeep-

“Shit.”

There’s the alarm. Need more sleep. No time for breakfast.

“Ugh, not again.”

The vicious cycle goes on and on.

“How the hell do I break this?” Continue reading “Break the guilt-trip cycle: forgive & forget”

Feeling depressed? Have some food for thought… literally!

Maybe you feel a little lethargic or even full-on depressed after eating something unhealthy, but have you thought about how the food you eat impacts your bod and brain 24/7? It’s not just after that one late night binge session that you’re not at the 100% awesomeness you could be at.

Your body and brain only work because of one reason: the food you put into it.

Rip off the diet labels

Paleo. Whole 30. Keto. Vegan. Vegetarian. Flexitarian. Pescatarian. Ovo-lacto vegetarian. Fasting…tarian? While labels help for specific recipe searches, do they help us all reach that healthy lifestyle we’re looking for? Or maybe they make you feel confused and overwhelmed. I know it does for me, and then I get to spend many fun hours researching what’s proven and what’s not (oh no, no sarcasm – I do enjoy it!)

So, how do you get to know what’s best for your genetic code and lifestyle? Continue reading “Rip off the diet labels”

Fat or Fiction? Fun fats to consider.

Let’s all eat gallons of coconut oil and smother it all over our body! No wait – Coconut oil is poison! No wait – it’s still better, and it won’t make us fat! Plus, olive oil spoils at high temperatures so you can’t cook with it. Oh wait – I can cook with it, it just can’t be virgin. But use virgin coconut oil for everything else! Oh wait, I mean olive.

Needless to say, it’s pretty easy to get confused and not know what information to trust. In this case, a meta-analysis (studying all the reliable data over a long period of time) is necessary. There’s almost always going to be conflicting studies in the media because they love to cherry-pick the science that will sensationalize the public in order to increase their viewers, and therefore; income.
