You’re lying in bed, your stomach hurts from all the food, and your head keeps spinning over the same thing, “Why.. why did I eat so much again”. You feel gross, full of regret, and the guilt-trip is bubbling up. You promise yourself, “Tomorrow will be a good day. I won’t over-do it tomorrow.”
-beepbeepbeep-
“Shit.”
There’s the alarm. Need more sleep. No time for breakfast.
“Ugh, not again.”
The vicious cycle goes on and on.
“How the hell do I break this?”
Well, easy answer. Difficult action. As usual.
Actually forgive yourself. And then, forget about it.
Blaming yourself continues the negative self-talk cycle, letting it go stops it.
Switching, little by little, to better pleasures will get you there.
You’ll still eat what you love & not go crazy because…
It’s not about giving up food you love, it’s about finding food you love that loves you back.
For example, my favourite potato chips sadly just cut up my mouth and make me feel ginormously pregnant with an ever-growing food baby.
Meanwhile, my brownies make me smile from ear to ear and I drool in pure chocolatey gooey joy. Best part, I don’t need to undo my pants button afterwards! … (who am I kidding, I just live in sweats if there’s junk food around).
To sum-up: Eat more awesomely delicious and nutritious food, and the guilt-trips and junk-fests will fade away.
But how to start?
R-E-S-P-E-C-T:
🎵 But all I’m asking… Is for a little respect when I come home, ooh, yeah now 🎵
Aretha Franklin says it best, because it all comes down to this: when you overindulge and don’t take time for your body you’re not treating yourself with respect. More like a receptacle to feed junk when it whines.
Taking care of yourself stems from one basic thing: self-respect.
Without it you don’t feel you’re worth the effort. And If you don’t feel you deserve it, you obviously don’t treat yourself as awesomely as you know you could.
Maybe it sounds cheesy, I don’t deny that, but that doesn’t make it less true: self-love is the first step to long-lasting healthy life choices – it goes way beyond summer bikini projects.
Make yourself believe it:
If you don’t feel the need to treat yourself well or that you don’t deserve it, you won’t.
On cue, the guilt-trips and self-hate will rear it’s ugly head after the next round of wine.. or tub of ice cream.. or rainbow frosted cupcakes.. whatever your guilty pleasure may be.
Focusing on one small thing at a time will get you there. It’s a proven confidence-booster, and it’s oh so possible. You can start now. Maybe it’s just breakfast, or just one healthy snack a day. That’s all you need. Once you realize you can do it, a whole new world opens up.
It’s a process, of course, and it’s not going to change overnight. We’ve been over criticizing ourselves since we developed the mental capacity to do so. It will take a lot of self-catching.
I’ll leave it with a quote from one of my favourite human beings.
“Remember, you have been criticizing yourself for years and it hasn’t worked. Try approving of yourself and see what happens.”
